Tips for adult acne?


Im 25, I have had acne since my late teens (mostly the cystic kind) and tried every product out there. I've seen a dermatologist, taken Accutane, etc. About a year ago I started Proactiv and it worked for a while but now the acne is back with a vengeance, and Im back to trying other products. Its on my face and a lot on my back (using an acne body wash won't help, either). Im curious to hear from other adults who suffer from adult acne to see what they've used, what works, etc. Thanks!

I actually had success with birth control pills. I had tried everything in the book with no success (or rather hardly any...I didn't go onto Accutane due to the severe effects that some birth control pills gave me as it was but Tetracycline did a fair amount of work before I began onto my birth control pill experience!). Some prescriptions broke me out, others didn't make a difference and others made a world of difference (Alesse = no change, Diane-35 = no change but SOFT skin, Ortho 0.5/35 = majorly cleared up skin +soft skin, Yasmin = HORRIBLE cystic acne breakouts, Ortho Tricyclen Lo = no change from before birth control use)!! I am on my 5th prescription since Sept 2007 because of some horrid side effects. The current one that I am on has been great thus far, but hasn't helped much with my acne situation (I just turned 20 last month). I am now trying to find some sort of cream/exfoliant/gel of some sort that works well with acne. A friend of mine who has the same problem told me about Neostrata's Skin Renewal Peel system that she absolutely loves and uses about once every couple of weeks. I MAY just have to try it myself as I have found good reviews of the product.

Sometimes it just so happens that the whole reason we break out is strictly due to hormones. At least, this seems to be mainly the case for me. I would be aware of a lot of products that can actually damage your skin more than do it good (as I'm sure you are well aware by now).

I was also on Differin at one point but it made my skin incredibly dry, red, flaky and burned like mad (this was pre-birth control pill). But, everyone reacts differently to any product.

Another option may be birth control pills. Hormonal pills such as OrthoTryCyclen and Estrostep are standard prescriptions that often help prevent acne outbreaks. They are not always totally effective in clearing up blemishes and at times must be used in combination with other forms of treatment. Again, a physician is the best person to consult with in helping to determine what the best options may be. When taking any kind of hormonal birth control pills, women must remember to follow health restrictions that come with use of the pill, such as not smoking cigarettes.
