Lace Wig Maintenance
Lace wigs should be cared for just like regular hair. The reason for this is because many lace wigs are made from top quality human hair with the cuticle intact. If you have a human lace wig made with virgin Indian Remy hair, it should be well maintained to keep it looking beautiful for a long time especially after spending so much money. There are a few simple steps to keep your lace wig, human hair or synthetic, looking great.
Before You Apply Your Lace Wig
Purchasing a lace wig cap protectant sealer will easily prolong the life of your lace wig. What the protectant is sealing are the hairs knotted on the lace. Overtime, these hairs can shed from regular washing or brushing. The product also helps to strengthen the lace front for adhesives to adhere to easily.
This is also perhaps one of the easiest ways to maintain your lace wig. After purchasing, simply brush your lace wig hair, spray on the sealer and let dry. It is suggested that you reapply about 2-3 times if it is a brand new lace wig. Overtime, you should also reapply before washing or getting it professionally repaired.
While You Wear Your Wig
There are a few things to do while wearing your wig as well that only require common sense. As with your own hair, your lace wig hair should be kept safe from harsh weather conditions like extreme heat and wind. Wrapping the lace wig hair up in a silk bonnet as you would your normal hair is a good idea to protect it from these conditions.
A few other common sense things that many of us forget are suggested as well. A wide tooth comb should be used instead of one of the harsher brushes that many people use. It will decrease the chance of tangles and shedding of cuticles. Since many people pull to harshly on their own hair when brushing, the wide tooth comb will lessen the affect of a heavy hand.
Even though these tips are applicable for all lace wig types, there is something that is unique to synthetic lace wigs. Synthetic hair tends to tangle easier and becomes "rattier" quicker. To combat those ratty ends, you can add a track of weave hair onto the nape of your own hair or at the nape of your lace wig. This one track can easily be replaced once it becomes ratty instead of having the ends of the lace wig remain permanently damaged.
When You Take Off Your Wig
The bulk of your lace wig products will go towards the removal of your lace wig. It is extremely important to have a lace wig adhesive remover. If you attempt to simply use alcohol or soap and water, you will damage the lace on the wig and your own hair. A lace wig adhesive remover dissolves even the strongest bonding glue.
Lace wig shampoo and lace cleansers are not one in the same. Some lace wig shampoos are simply meant for the hair on a lace wig while others are multipurpose to cleanse out remaining glue from lace and cleanse the hair. You will need both products so make sure to read what your buy before purchase.
Lastly, keep the lace on your lace wig intact by taking it to a lace wig repair person or a specialty shop. Swiss lace is far more likely to need repairs on damaged lace overtime. Repairing a small tear before it progresses is imperative. Getting more hair installed in the hairline is a good idea to keep the hairline looking full and natural.
Most wigs can last at least 6 months with quality care. The most important tips to remember are to wash your wig and let it fully dry, handle the lace wig with care, and keep the lace clean. These simple steps can keep your investment wearable and fabulous for the long run.
