How To: Styling Wavy to Loose Curly Hair (Curlisto.com)
How to get Wavy Hair?
This look isn't about to go out of style anytime soon. Wavy hair is hot, hot, and hot. Great, sassy beachy waves are in for summer. You don't have to go to the beach to get full, sexy, salt-water hair. Waves are all the rage this year! They’re easy to make, and have a very natural look about them. Waves work on anyone who has medium shoulder-length hair to long hair. Waves not only look great on everyone, but add volume and texture to your hair.
The allure of touchable waves can't be denied, though it may seem hard to pull off. However, this is a misconception. Even if your hair is normally flat and limp, you can achieve a great style at home with a single styling product, your blow dryer and some bobby pins. Here's how to get beachy, wavy hair any time of year in a few simple steps -
- Take a shower and wash your hair with curl enhancing shampoo, or use a spray bottle to dampen your hair. Alternately, turn upside down and spray freshly washed roots with volumizing or texturizing spray. If you washed hair, towel dry until hair is damp.
- Lean forward and tilt head down so hair is hanging down and work product into hair by scrunching hair with hands. When scrunching, you grab sections of your hair in your hand and gently squeeze as you push the hair up towards your scalp.
- Rub in some mousse to give your hair a little volume - if your hair’s flat on top, this style will look like you got rained on. Blow-dry upside down without combing; just run your fingers through it.
- Brush your hair gently. Blow-dry hair straight, starting at the roots to get extra volume. Hair must be completely dry for this look to work. Blow cold air at the roots to add volume. You can either let it air dry for a more relaxed, beachy look. Or you can get a more finished look by blow drying with a diffuser attached to the dryer. When blow drying, keep head turned down and continue scrunching hair while applying heat.
- Separate hair into three sections, securing with a ponytail holder. Release the curl after about 5-10 seconds (hold longer if you want a tighter curl). You should have a corkscrew curl. Roll curl and bobby pin it close to the scalp. Once pinned curls have cooled, release them. Apply a curl enhancing product such as Bed Heads Curls Rock or Aveda's curl enhancing lotion.
- Three words: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. For an alternative approach to taming curl, try using a chemical free cleansing conditioner. Fine and curly/wavy hair may need an additional protein or strengthening treatment to even out unruly curl formations.
- Remove nozzle from dryer and gently loosen waves with cool air. You can also separate curls with your fingers, just make sure not to brush them out.
- Spritz some hairspray at your hairline underneath the big chunk of hair we just talked about. Run your fingers through the curls in that section angling toward the back of your head. As soon as it looks cute, hairspray that section and leave it alone! Now run your fingers through the rest of the curls downward, spritzing them with hairspray as soon as they look right. Don’t start your fingers too high in your hair, or all of the volume and curl at the top will disappear; instead, start at about 3 inches down from the top of your head. Finish with a little shine serum spray!
Here are some natural styling tips for wavy hair –* Separate the hair into one or two inch sections. Gently twist the hair to form more ringlets.
* Using a good leave in moisturizing treatment is always beneficial.
* Naturally wavy hair requires special attention. Seek out a stylist that has experience working with natural curl. Key things to look for when choosing a stylist:
* Find a stylist who clearly understands wave formation and who knows how to manage wavy hair.
* It is pertinent your stylist gets what too many layers can do to wavy hair.
* Your stylist should be able to visualize what curly hair will look like dry while working with it wet.
* I prefer twisting the hair and cutting each piece separately because it keeps the curls more defined while keeping ends light and springy.
* Towel dry hair with paper towels is another great tip to remove the excess moisture out of curly hair.
* Air drying is always better than heat styling when it comes to natural curl.
