I'm a guy, how can I tone down my acne?


I never have had bad acne. One or two pimples here and there, and relatively clear skin with a few blackheads here and there. As of the past 3 days I've had upwards of 5-10 small pimples on my face, on my cheeks mostly, and I don't know what could have been the sudden cost.

Been working a lot so I've been eating fast food a lot since it's the quick fix. More than usual.

Been sleeping on a clean pillow, and I wash my face at least 3 times a day with cold water.

My sister has ProActiv and MaryKay. I tried the MaryKay last night and it really smoothed out my skin, and I tried the ProActiv this morning and it broke my acne out even worse. Now I have to wait for it to tone down a bit.

Not sure what I should continue to use for the coming weeks... This MaryKay 3 step thing or this ProActiv 3 step thing?

Either way, my pimple problems used to be, pop, rinse face, wake up. Sort of scarred, but pimples are pretty much gone.

The fact that they're red is just what bugs me.

Applying lavander essential oil works wonders. I didn't really believe it until someone reccomded I try it instead of the standard on the shelf stuff.

Besides that, I have found the following things matter and tend to effect acne.
1) Eating sugar (and artifical ones). If you eat no sugar your predispotion to acne drops a lot. Mine completely vanished when I did.
2) Eating greasy fried food (aka fast food). I noticed I was able to feel outbreaks coming on as I ate the stuff. I think sugar matters more though.
3) Getting rid of hair covering the face (so beards, sideburns, or long curly hair that gets to your cheaks). I don't know why this one matters but it does.
4) Washing the face with water from a shower. The more you wash it the better it gets. However, chlorine which is in all tap water irritates it as well, so if you get the chance to get a chlorine shower filter that goes a long way to fixing your skin (and hair).

There are some other anecdotal things I am not sure of in anyway about acne, but I'd leave it as; if you are generally healthy then you will not get acne, so most of the time its best to just think of acne as an indictator for your body. Then again its a pretty awful one to deal with, and I went through a lot of grief before I figured out what I just told you.

I'm a fan of hydrogen peroxide, but I normally don't reccomend it to people since the usage is more complicated. However if you have stuff around the mouth you might want to consider topically applying some.

Acne is the number one skin problem in the world. Sometimes when you wake up with a new break out you can feel self conscious about leaving the house, because you feel you have the worst skin of everyone you know. But that is not true. These solutions don't require a lot of money or a trip to the pharmacy. They include:

Start With Proper Cleansing

While acne is not caused by dirt, lack of exfoliation can be a contributing factor. Make an exfoliating mask out of half a cup of instant oatmeal and 2 tablespoons of water. First, apply hot compresses (hot, wet washcloths) to the face to open pores. Then gently rub in the oatmeal mask, avoiding the eye area. Rinse off with cool water.

Use Alpha Hydroxy Acids to Diminish Inflammation

The juice in lemons is citric acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid. Dab lemon juice on a cotton swab and apply to individual inflamed pimples. If you have very sensitive skin you might need to dilute the lemon juice. If you apply before bed, the inflammation should be visibly diminished by the morning. Apply a good mineral based concealer and you should be good to go.

Toothpaste Is Not Just For Teeth

It is not just an "old wives tale". Many people swear by good old white toothpaste dabbed on pimples before you go to bed. Obviously, this is a quick fix for individual pimples and not for your entire face. Also, it need to be tooth paste, not bubble gum flavored sparkly tooth gel from your kids' bathroom.

What you should definitely NOT do is pop or squeeze your pimples, or otherwise traumatize your poor skin. I know the temptation is almost overwhelming, but it will only lead to scarring in the long run.

Ideally, you should fix the root of your acne. That will take more time, but it needn't take a lot of money, regardless of what the dermatologists might tell you. I wish you the best of luck!
