Does Witch Hazel help get rid of acne?
I wash my face with st.ives green tea cleanser, then i apply witch hazel. I started using witch hazel yesterday. Will it help clear up my acne, or am i wasting my time?
Witch hazel can actually be irritating if used repeatedly on skin, that's because it contains alcohol, and alcohol is the worst thing you can put on your skin; it over-dries it and causes damage to it without you even knowing. Unfortunately, many skin care products, especially the ones made to treat acne, contain witch hazel and alcohol. From now on avoid products that contain these two ingredients. I read about this in the book "Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me" by a renowned skin care expert called Paula Begoun. I was able to treat my own acne by following her advice.
To treat acne, you need to wash your face twice a day, morning and before you go to bed, with a gentle cleanser. Try not to use scrubbing cleansers, as they can be too harsh on skin and they don't do anything for acne. So if you're using the cleanser version, and not the scrub, of the St. Ives Green Tea cleanser, that's great keep using it. Use a lightweight sunscreen in the morning of at least SPF15. If you wear makeup, make sure that any foundation you use is also lightweight and oil-free. If you wear blush or bronzer, go for the powder ones as opposed to the cream. Thick/heavy products can clog pores and as a result cause more acne.
At night, apply the acne treatment after washing your face with the cleanser. If you want to use a toner after washing your face to remove any traces of makeup/oil before you apply the acne product, you can do that if you want. Good toners are Neutrogena Alcohol-free toner and The Body Shop Aloe Calming toner. Those are probably the only 2 toners I was able to find that don't contain alcohol or other irritating ingredients, and they are also affordable.
