What You Need to Know About Microdermabrasion and Acne Scars
Microdermabrasion is a process with which dead cells of skin are removed leaving a newer softer and silkier skin. This is considered a cosmetic process which, when professionally done, is usually done in a dermatologist's office or a SPA using aluminum oxide or diamond particles. It can also be done at home with the use of a microdermabrasion kit. The latter is far less cost prohibitive than the former. Proper use of the microdermabrasion process rejuvenates and renews the skin. You can even usemicrodermabrasion for acne and acne scarring.
Microdermabrasion for acne is purported to work. Microdermabrasion strips the blackheads out of the pores with a combination of mild skin abrasion and suction. The layer of skin that is removed from the face is extremely thin and has no live cells. You cannot damage the cells if they are not alive. The crystals used in microdermabrasion sloughs the skin while the vacuum sucks up the dead cells and the dirt that is clogging the pores. Acne is deep in the pores therefore, the microdermabrasion needs a stronger suction to unclog the pores. The microdermabrasion process cannot get that deep. But the process does work.
It may take several sessions before you can finally see any improvement in the acne condition. There will be less breakouts and the complexion may look better and shinier and have less blackheads. This kind of treatment is good only for a very mild form of acne. However, if your acne is moderate or severe than avoid this treatment because it can be more harmful than helpful. Some doctors believe that using microdermabrasion can be damaging to the skin and the damage can be permanent.
Professional microdermabrasion procedures use a crystal flow that is on your skin for only a second and then they are vacuumed. The microdermabrasion crystals are not on your face long enough to cause a reaction. The home microdermabrasion kits, on the other hand, can cause breakouts in those that are acne prone. These home kits use creams that are absorbed by the skin and can cause the pores to become clogged. Clogged pores are the primary cause of acne.
A recent study done by the Scientists of the Northwestern Ohio University and The College of Medicine in Ohio reported that microdermabrasion treatments for acne worked on some but not others. About ninety six percent of the patients were content with their results and would recommend the treatments to others. The consensus was that microdermabrasion can be used effectively on acne; some acne control products that are available now have beads of crystals that offer the microdermabrasion effect. It should be known at this point that acne does not just effect teens as there are many adults that suffer from adult acne, which can be every bit as devastating as teen acne.
