Why do I seem to break out more when I use special soaps and cleansers?


I wash my face everyday with regular soap and water. It seems like when I spend lots of money on special soaps and cleansers, it seems to break out more! What am I doing wrong?

You're probably allergic to something they are using. Compare your normal products to see what's different, and make a list. Then compare the special products to each other and see what matches up. If you're looking for an oil-busting routine, here's a simple one with no fancy expensive stuff needed:

Use a hypoallergenic/sensitive skin wipe to take most of the makeup off your face, if you wear makeup. If not, start with the next step.

Wash with a gentle soap like hypoallergenic neutrogena facial bars or Burt's Bees Burts Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream (awesome stuff).

Once a week, do a light scrub with an exfoliater if your skin is not too sensitive, before the cleansing.

Follow cleansing with a 50/50 rubbing alcohol/water solution (just buy a bottle, pour half and fill with water). Use this as a toner for the oily or break-out prone areas of the face. You can also use straight rubbing alcohol, but it depends on your skin's sensitivity. A better item is if you can find 50/50 isopropyl(rubbing) alcohol/wintergreen, sometimes at dollar tree or something like that. Use cotton swab or some tissue and swab a layer or so on.

Wait about 10 minutes, and apply a light, oil-free moisturizer to your face, paying special attention to dry spots and around the eyes (try Aloe & Green Tea Oil-Free Moisturizer by Alba Botanica. All of them can be found online cheap, too. Just run it through google.

This is essentially what proactive and all the other kits are charging you lots of money for.
