How To Treat Adult Acne With Tea Tree Oil
It is not only adolescents who suffer from acne. Many older people also struggle with acne. But because adult skin is less resilient than a teenager's skin, many of today's acne medications can be too harsh for adults. For this reason and others, many adults try natural remedies to reduce breakouts.
Tea tree oil is one of the more popular natural acne treatments. The oil is obtained from the leaves of the melaleuca alternafolia tree native to Australia. Aborigines have been using these leaves for many years due to their medicinal qualities and people continue to use the oil for a range of skin ailments.
The growth of bacteria within a pore that is clogged is one of the factors that contribute to acne formation. The oil of the tea tree is successful in treating acne lesions due to its bacteria-killin properties. By killing bacteria on the skin, tea tree oil removes one of the factors involved in acne breakouts.
In 1990, a study was published comparing the effectiveness of a five percent tea tree oil gel to a five percent benzoyl peroxide lotion in treating mild to moderate acne lesions. The study indicated that both medicines caused a reduction in the amount of acne lesions, yet the tea tree oil need longer to work. Still, the treatment with tea tree oil exhibited fewer side effects than the benzoyl peroxide treatment which is quite beneficial to adult skin.
The recommended way for using tea tree oil is to dilute it down in water to a 5% concentration. You can apply this solution twice daily, making sure that your skin has been washed well before applying. If you find the smell a bit much, use the oil only at night before going to bed.
Although tea tree oil is natural, it is not free from potential side effects. Sometimes a rash occurs in people who use the oil, likely due to an allergy. If you try treating your acne with tea tree oil, first start with a small quantity of diluted oil and monitor your skin for adverse reactions. If you see any signs of any problems, stop use as this medication is not something you can handle.
Treatment of acne in adults can be difficult due to the tendency of acne treatments to be overly harsh on adult skin. If you have used over-the-counter acne products like benzoyl peroxide for your adult acne and found them too drying to your skin, tea tree oil may be a good alternative. As with any acne treatment, allow a couple of weeks of consistent treatment for results to occur.
