how to get rid of facial redness without causing a breakout?
I have dry, acne-prone skin although I use proactiv and an oil-free moisturizer and I need a remedy to relieve redness and irritation without causing my skin to break out.
Hi there,
Management of acne can be tough, as well as extremely frustrating. Despite the many different products on the marker, both over-the-counter as well as prescription meds, there is no sure fire way to correct acne. Based on what you have said in your question, I can however, make a few suggestions. First I want to say that acne can be caused by many things, including hormonal fluctuations, diet, stress, etc (even dirty pillowcases or drooling when you sleep!).
Are you finding your skin to be dryer since starting the proactive? If this is the case (as it is with many people using proactive), the cause of your breakouts may be the proactive itself. Although the product does work great for any people, myself included, some find that it only works for a certain period of time after which point they find their skin to be excessively dry. When the skin gets overly dry, the body’s natural response is to try and correct that. Which may lead to breakouts and redness. So that is one possibility.
If you don't feel you skin has become excessively dry since starting proactive, one option that may work for you is to speak to your doctor about getting started on an oral antibiotic. This helps many people who suffer from acne, as it helps to prevents the infections that occur under your skin that result in pimples. One disadvantage of this, as with any long term / prophylactic antibiotic, is the possibility of developing infections from antibiotic resistant strains, which have adapted again the antibiotics. This of course, is a long term effect, but it is a concern worth noting.
As I'm sure you know there are many other products on the market you could try. Many find a simple spot treatment of benzoyle peroxide and/or salicylic acid to help.
Lastly, if your acne is severe enough there is a very effective medication know as accutane. I am not a particularly big fan of it, as it requires you to have to get blood work done monthly and there are many side effects, but some doctors swear by it. I am not a dermatologist so I can't really say much about it, but it is out here.
