Doctors' opinion please --Sea Salt (naturally available) and refined Table Salt - which is better for health?


I understand that when naturally available Sea Salt is refined, vital minerals like Magnesium, Calcium, etc., are also removed. And these separated minerals are used in chemical industries. The salt which remains after removal of these minerals, is powdered and used as Table Salt while cooking. Since this Table Salt is without the minerals which are essential for our human body, it leads to problems like Osteoporosis, etc. Is it true?

Sea salt is marginally better because it contains trace amounts of magnesium, calcium etc. Chefs think it gives a better flavour too. However you wouldn't go relying on sea salt to provide you with these essential elements. Osteoporosis is a multi-factorial disease - low calcium and vitamin D, low oestrogen, sedentary lifestyle and smoking amongst other things.
Sea salt or iodized salt is an important source of iodine for people who have no access to seafood. People in countries like Mongolia (a land locked country) have high rates of goitre (from iodine deficiency) which can be so severe that children risk being permanently brain damaged.

PS: Regular table salt does not normally contain iodine (unless it is labelled iodized salt). It used to be compulsory for all manufacturers to iodize all table salt sold in Australia. This is no longer done and we are seeing more iodine deficiency cases. The government is considering bringing it back in.

Can I use sea shore pieces of white coral to get coral calcium?


I understand that kefir grains love coral calcium. Will they be able to absorb enough of the minerals that they want from pieces of coral? Is there a special preparation for these pieces of coral?
Do you just wash it off and then start dropping it into kefir mixtures?

The smaller the pieces the ore quickly they will react.

coral is basically calcium carbonate., the acid in the kefir will slowly react with the calcium carbonate releasing the CO2 and leaving a more soluble calcium. The good bacteria that ferment the milk produce acid from the milk sugar.
