How can I write a check in Euros? My bank accounts are in dollars. I want to get a spot rate today!?
I heard that the best way to convert dollars to euros is to do it in the US at the going spot rate. I need to make some payments in Euros and would like to write some checks today to send them overseas.
You can not just write a euro check from your US$ checking account since your account is denominated in US$. When the check clears your bank, they will take the amount you have written on the check out as the US$, not euros, if they even honor it at all.
You should ask your bank if they can issue a euro draft (i.e. check) payable to your payees. If they can, then the bank will screw you on the spot rate plus charge you a fee and take the US$ out of your account! And then you have to mail the payment overseas!
The WORST place to exchange cash is at the spot rate at a US Bank as they make a huge profit on it.
You would be better to use a credit card and let them handle the exchange, plus you won't have to mail checks overseas.
